A new student accommodation scheme designed by a Leicester architectural studio has gained planning permission.

The 43 studio apartments were designed by InkDrawn and will be built on the site of a former antiques centre which is set to be demolished.

Two blocks will be built on the Welford Road site, near to the junction with Victoria Park Road, including a four-storey building at the front with 22 apartments, and a three-storey building at the back with 21 studios. The rear apartments will be accessed by a communal courtyard.

InkDrawn director Dan Nestoruk said: “This project has been three years in the planning, and we’ve worked extensively with the local authority, our client, º£½ÇÊÓƵ Land Ltd and Marrons Planning to bring forward a design that will integrate with the neighbourhood and benefit Leicester’s significant student population.

“The positioning and orientation of each block were informed by the surrounding properties to ensure privacy is retained, while the massing and materials are designed to complement the street scene.”

He said the overall appearance demonstrate a “bold and ordered design” with “multi-tone red brick” and “intricate detailing”.

Inside the apartments have been designed to have lots of natural light and an Open-plan layout. Renewable technology including solar PV panels will be installed on both roofs.

Mr Nestoruk said: “186 Welford Road occupies a prime location in walking distance from the University of Leicester, which was recently named the biggest climber in one of the national university league tables.
