Gloucester City Council's former customer service offices look set to be sold.

The approval by civic chiefs is expected for the freehold sale of the old Gateway offices at 92-96 Westgate Street, with the proviso that the coat of arms and mural on the Three Cocks Lane wall remains intact.

The council, having no further use for the building, put the property on the market last autumn. On the open market, the site was listed with a guide price estimated between £600,000 and £700,000 through a sale by private treaty.

Proposals received for the building varied from £585,000 to £610,000, presenting a range of future intentions from entirely commercial through to mixed-use and residential.

The council has gone for the highest bid which will use a mortgage as opposed to one of the other bids which was a cash offer. They are also keeping tight-lipped about the identity of the preferred bidder, only divulging that it’s a "well known local business" poised to maintain employment in the area.

A council report set to be discussed on April 9 outlines the running expenses of the building, amounting to £115,721 for the fiscal year of 2022/23.

These costs would decrease if the building was vacant; however, the council will still incur expenditures related to business rates and security.

By selling off the site, the council looks to trim operational costs and create a revenue stream for the forthcoming financial year.
