A former NHS office building in West Bromwich is poised for a transformation into over 120 flats. Kingston House, previously utilised as offices for NHS commissioning services, is set to be converted into 128 flats under plans proposed by TheStudios.
These compact studio flats, marketed as 'co-living accommodation', range from just over 15 to 27 square metres and come equipped with an en-suite bathroom and kitchenette. Shared amenities include kitchens, a communal lounge and workspace, a gym, a cinema room, and an outdoor terrace.
The existing structure would be partially extended to accommodate additional rooms, reducing the current 95-space car park to 56 spaces. The office space, spanning 43,000 square feet, was listed on the market for nearly £3m in 2023.
The adjacent former office block, Metro House, formerly known as Parham House, was transformed into nearly 50 flats in 2018 after being sold for £1.5m. TheStudios previously converted the 12-storey former Carillion offices at Construction House in Birch Street, Wolverhampton into nearly 200 flats as part of a £10 million project.
Now rebranded as Richmond House, the first batch of flats opened in 2018. The conversion of the then-vacant building, constructed in the 1960s and once home to Tarmac before a demerger that led to the ill-fated Carillion, included a cafe and bar along with many of the shared facilities similarly outlined in the developer's plans for West Bromwich High Street, reports .
The application was accompanied by a statement outlining the vision: "We aim to replicate the success of this model by bringing much-needed affordable and luxury co-living spaces to the High Street town within West Bromwich. This proposal will bring significant private investment into West Bromwich High Street and bring old disused office spaces back into use as affordable accommodation."
It continued, "TheStudios is committed to working with and supporting local partners and businesses within the West Bromwich area. Our development would increase footfall and spending which would assist with general economic growth within the local area to support the West Bromwich town plan. We propose to create 128 studios within 22 clusters of six."
The statement also detailed the amenities, "Complete with private en-suite facilities and a shared kitchen. On the ground floor, there will be a gym, cinema room, large outdoor terrace, laundry, workspaces and lounge."
