Public and private sector organisations are coming together to showcase investment opportunities in Newcastle at the world’s biggest real estate conference.

Invest Newcastle, part of NewcastleGateshead Initiative (NGI), is leading a delegation to the Mipim event in Cannes, in the south of France, next March, working with a range of partners to highlight some of the area’s main developments. Newcastle and Gateshead councils will join the delegation along with organisations including NCG, Avison Young, Ryder Architecture, Eldon Square and Gainford Group.

The city’s stand at the conference is planning a number of events, with key themes including partnership working, talent and skills, the creative industries and impact investment. There are also plans to collaborate with the Invest Saudi Arabia delegation because of the growing links between Newcastle and the Middle Eastern country.

At a launch event for the delegation, NGI chief executive Sarah Green said the conference was an ideal opportunity to highlight positive developments in the city centre.

She said: “Newcastle comes through really strongly and is a core destination for investment and for people to come to. I think that the opportunity we’ve got in Newcastle and Gateshead, I don’t believe there are any core cities that have the same level of opportunity.

“If we bring together the two sides of the river and look at the opportunity in Gateshead for the riverside renaissance and look on the other side at things like the Forth Yards development. There’s absolutely incredible the investment opportunities there is in our city centre, and the opportunity for transformation in a city that’s brilliantly connected to two capitals in Edinburgh and London and with an international airport that gets us out to over 80 destinations.”

The annual Mipim event attracts more than 20,000 delegates from over 100 countries, with cities, regions and nations competing for investment from property funders. Newcastle and its partners have been exhibiting at the event since 2015, attracting backing for a number of high profile development projects.

The mayors of Athens and Cologne, plus senior executives from companies including Legal and General, Canary Wharf Group and Zurich Insurance, are among those scheduled to speak at the event.
