With sweeping views across Newcastle’s Grainger Town and beyond, this office has more to offer than your average workplace.

The offices at the top of Grey Street will come up for auction at SDL Property Auctions later this week with a guide price of £275,000.

The 1,950sq ft space is located within the famous Central Exchange Building, which was built in 1837 and is regarded by many as one of architect Richard Grainger’s finest designs.

The triangular building a stone’s throw from Grey’s Monument, the Theatre Royal and the Eldon Square Shopping Centre, was originally intended to be a corn exchange, but instead became a subscription newsroom, then an art gallery, vaudeville theatre and restaurant and even a hotel.

But disaster struck in 1901 when a major fire gutted most of the interior of the building. In its place, an elegant Edwardian shopping centre – the Central Arcade – with a glass barrel-vaulted ceiling and stunning tile work, was constructed in the original building in 1906.

SDL Property Auction’s marketing executive Ellie Murphy said this is one of the more unusual sales the firm has dealt with recently.

“We have sold some very different properties in the past, like a water tower, but it is fair to say this is one of our more unusual lots. Its location in the heart of Newcastle on a much sought-after street, its character, its history and the stunning views from the fourth floor across the city, make it stand out.”

The property currently comprises cellular office accommodation with a kitchen and WC, but subject to planning consent could be turned into a couple of apartments.
