New funding to support Birmingham university's green energy plans

Aston will develop a green energy centre on its city centre campus following £35.5 million grant award

Aston University campus in Birmingham

A new green energy centre will be built on the campus of a Birmingham university after it was awarded £35.5 million in grant funding to support the project.

Aston University has secured the capital from the government's Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme and will now work towards its own net-zero emissions targets.

The green energy centre will be created in a newly acquired building, in Woodcock Street, which will eventually be home to its business school and healthcare and business hubs.

The centre will be powered by sustainable technologies and serve as a living lab, supporting research and education in sustainable technologies.

Furthermore, the project includes the decommissioning of gas boilers currently used in the Energy and Bioproducts Research Institute (EBRI) and the Aston Day Hospital buildings.

Other planned work includes energy efficiency projects in several other buildings across the city centre campus.

Vice-chancellor Aleks Subic said: "The ambitious Aston University 2030 sustainability strategy is being realised by establishing the new green energy centre that will enable the university to reach net zero carbon by 2028, two years ahead of our plan.
