New Birmingham HS2 college set for green light

'City fully endorses' government's decision to locate new college on city science park as planners expected to give scheme the go ahead

A prestigious new college which will educate the next generation of engineers in Birmingham is set for the green light.

City planners are expected to approve the development of the new National College for High Speed Rail on Birmingham Science Park Aston next to the Digbeth Branch Canal.

The college, along with a sister site in Doncaster, will provide specialist vocational training and contain workshops, classrooms, a café and office space alongside a car park and external teaching area containing railway tracks, masts and social space next to the canal.

Totalling 61,350 sq ft, the college has been designed by Sheffield-based architecture firm Bond Bryan.

and will feed into the development of the HS2 high-speed rail line between London and Birmingham, including its terminal in nearby Curzon Street, and other future rail projects.

The application will debated at next Thursday's meeting of Birmingham City Council's planning committee where it has been recommended for approval.

A report said: "Birmingham has been chosen by the Government as one of the two locations for a national vocational training college for HS2, a decision that is fully endorsed by the city.
