More student flats coming to Selly Oak

City planners back project to build 63 bedrooms on a car park behind The Goose pub in Bristol Road

Some of Victoria Hall's student flats in Selly Oak - the developer will now build on another site in the district

The latest development of student accommodation in has been granted approval by city planners.

Victoria Hall Management has won the green light to build 60 bedrooms in shared flats and three studios on land behind The Goose pub at 561 Bristol Road.

The scheme would reach up to four storeys and comprise three detached buildings with a landscaped courtyard and a fourth building containing a ground floor commercial unit which would front onto Bristol Road and enclose the site.

It will be built on a pay and display car park - there is no provision for parking in the new development although there will be space for 16 bikes.

Speaking at a meeting of Birmingham City Council's planning committee, Coun Peter Douglas Osborn (Con Weoley) said: "There would be an increased demand for the apartments given the proximity of the pub to the students."

Coun Gareth Moore (Con Erdington), who voted against, added: "The pub car park is underused and normally in that case I would have no objection to this. But the students will need parking of their own."

Developers hope the accommodation will be ready in time for the 2017/18 academic year and, although independent from the University of Birmingham, it is likely to be occupied by those attending the nearby campus.

Victoria Hall already has a substantial presence in Selly Oak having built two blocks either side of Grange Road - which backs onto this latest application site - and a third phase on the A38 Selly Oak bypass.
