Manchester-headquartered bank DF Capital is moving into the landmark black glass Express Building as it plans to continue its expansion in the city.

DF Capital has taken a ten-year lease on some 23,000 sq ft of space across two floors at the Grade II-listed building in Great Ancoats Street. The bank already has 129 staff in Manchester and says the autumn move will give it more space to hire more people.

DF Capital, currently based off Oxford Street, provides working capital solutions to businesses across the º£½ÇÊÓƵ, including dozens of manufacturers and more than 1,300 dealers in the commercial, powersports and leisure sectors. It launched a personal savings arm in 2020, which now has some 15,000 accounts.

The Express building was built in 1939 as the Northern base for the Daily Express newspaper. It was designed by Sir Owen Williams in a similar style to other Daily Express buildings in Glasgow and in Fleet Street, London, and is renowned for its black glass curves and Streamline Moderne styling.

The bank said the move “is a strategic step in DF Capital’s ongoing growth and expansion journey.”

It added: “It provides a significantly larger, modern workspace that will enable closer collaboration, enhance innovation, and accommodate the company’s growing team. The new headquarters also reflect the bank’s deep and ongoing commitment to Manchester as its home — cementing its position as the only specialist bank to base its head office in the heart of the city.”

Carl D’Ammassa, CEO of DF Capital, said: “As a Manchester-based bank, we’re proud to continue investing in the city and in its local talent. This marks our third home here in Manchester and represents an exciting new chapter for us as we continue to scale the bank and grow our team further.

“The Express Building is a true Manchester landmark that shares our values of originality, bold thinking and creativity — qualities that define our people and the Northern Quarter itself. We look forward to welcoming our colleagues, clients and partners to our new home later this year.”
