The Malhotra Group has expanded its care portfolio following the completion of a £10m development in Sunderland.

The care, leisure and property development group has created 50 new jobs through the opening of Bede House in Ryhope, a 68-bed facility operated under its care division, Prestwick Care.

The group – which also owns a string of bars, restaurants and hotels in the region – said the home will provide specialist mental health care for young adults, along with a specialist brain injuries unit which, alongside its facilities, will offer a range of amenities for the residents to enjoy.

Facilities include an on-site café, cinema and hairdressing salon and a large outdoor terrace along with a greenhouse, which can be used by residents who enjoy gardening.

Bede House also has a number of art pieces created for the communal areas, including a large scale stained glass window and an installation made from Australian driftwood which was especially commissioned to go into the home.

Bunty Malhotra, CEO of Malhotra Group Plc, said: “I started my career as a care provider in Sunderland some 30 years ago.

“It’s very important to the group that we have been able to create a specialist care facility of this standard in the city and have the ability to provide such high level of care, along with creating a number of job opportunities. “We appreciate the support from the local authority and CQC during the commissioning process.”
