Library of Birmingham sweeps board at RIBA Awards

City's landmark £188 million library named region's top building alongside two other category wins

The Library Of Birmingham won three categories at the 2014 RIBA West Midlands Awards

The £188 million Library of Birmingham was the big winner at the 2014 RIBA West Midlands Regional Awards where it took home three of the four prizes.

The landmark building, which was designed by Dutch architecture firm Mecanoo and opened last year, was named overall West Midlands building of the year by the Royal Institute of British Architects.

In addition, Patrick Arends from Mecanoo was named emerging architect of the year while the library's owner Birmingham City Council was crowned client of the year.

Making up the category winners was the Centre of Refurbishment Excellence (CoRE) in Stoke-on-Trent which won the sustainability category.

A total of eight buildings from across the West Midlands were named as regional winners by RIBA at the award ceremony - held at the Library of Birmingham - from which the four category winners were chosen.

They were:

Ashperton Primary Academy, Herefordshire, Warren Benbow Architects

Parkside, Birmingham City University, Associated Architects
