North East hospitality firm Cairn Group is driving forward plans for a £16m hotel in the heart of Sunderland.

Plans for a 120-bedroom hotel in Keel Square have been submitted by the Newcastle company, two years after the proposals were first announced.

The new hotel will be set over five floors and is set to create 130 jobs when it opens, becoming the group’s 34th º£½ÇÊÓƵ hotel, alongside its well known North East properties Holiday Inn Jesmond, Royal Station Hotel Newcastle and Redworth Hall Durham.

The firm also owns and operates 34 bars and restaurant around the region and beyond, include Sohe and Spy Bar in Jesmond and River Bar in Washington.

The hotel is one of a number of projects that will progress in the city centre, forming part of a £500m vision to transform the centre of the city.

Aneil Handa, a director at Cairn Group, said: “We’re delighted to be moving forward with this hotel development right in the centre of a city that is transforming, thanks to significant investment from both the public and private sector.

“We have been working closely with the team at the council to progress with plans and we’re pleased to be in a position to move forward with a planning application. There is a growing sense of momentum in Sunderland and we’re looking forward to being part of that.”

The hotel will have ground floor commercial units with opportunities for bars and restaurants, further adding to the city’s daytime and evening economy. The group is open to providing letting opportunities to both national operators as well as local businesses.
