Leicester City Council buys Haymarket Shopping Centre

The council is already a major tenant of the 1970s shopping centre

Leicester City Council has invested almost £10 million in buying the city’s Haymarket Shopping Centre.

The council said it had taken an opportunity to add the big centre to its property portfolio before the site went to market.

It said it bought the 1970s shopping centre for £9.9 million from a pot of £10m set aside for capital investment within the council’s overall capital programme.

This funding can only be spent on buying or improving buildings or highways, and not on running services.

Before purchasing the property, the council was a major tenant of the previous owners, contributing 19 percent of all revenues.

It paid rent for the Haymarket car park, Haymarket Theatre, Haymarket House – which is sub-let to a Travelodge hotel and the Haymarket Health sexual health clinic.

In the spring of 2020 the theatre announced that it would not be reopening when the first lockdown lifted.

A spokesman said savings from rent payments and the income generated from rent paid by other tenants will give the council an income to continue to support critical services.
