Landmarks in massive Newcastle city centre office scheme for HMRC

The Pilgrim's Quarter development will eventually provide accommodation for around 9,000 workers

A huge city centre office development has marked two major landmarks.

The scheme to create office accommodation for around 9,000 His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs staff on Newcastle’s Pilgrim Street has been ongoing since last year, with the centre due to be HMRC’s largest regional centre at 463,000 sq ft. The office will stand at between six and nine storeys tall and wrap around Pilgrim Street, Market Street, New Bridge Street West and John Dobson Street.

As well as finalising the demolition of the interior of Carliol House at the southern end of the site, the project has recently seen the erection of a second tower crane to speed up the development. The second crane will help the construction of more steelwork on the site, including the infill steelwork tying in the retained Carliol House façade on Market Street.

At 130m long and 10 storeys high, the facade scheme is one of the longest and highest retention schemes in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ.

Marc Gill, HMRC senior sponsor for the North East: “We continue to be hugely impressed with progress on the Pilgrim’s Quarter development, and the arrival of TC2 on site moves us one step closer on our journey. Pilgrim’s Quarter will provide HMRC with some of the best facilities the department has to offer, co-locating thousands of high-quality government careers here in the heart of Newcastle, as well as boosting the local economy.”

Michael Johansen, construction director at the main contractor, Bowmer and Kirkland, said: “The month of August saw the completion of the demolition to Carliol House and the erection of our second tower crane, these are 2 major landmarks in the projects build programme. I am very proud of the way our fantastic team manage their way through such challenges on such a logistically challenging scheme. We can’t wait to continue this journey to deliver what will be such an iconic building for our much-loved region. “

Commercial, town planning and project management services on the project are being provided by Avison Young with architectural design by Ryder Architecture and engineering input by Cundall. The contractor is Bowmer and Kirkland.
