In 2013, Mott MacDonald Bentley delivered a programme of change to ensure that the firm's target of company-wide adoption of Building Information Modelling (BIM) was met. This was demonstrated using examples from projects substantially completed on their non-infrastructure framework with Severn Trent Water.
At Droitwich Sewage Treatment Works, this included the development and use of a gaming engine so the end user could walk around the proposed design during design reviews. Technical barriers were overcome to prevent the effective sharing of BIM information at Oswestry Service Reservoir by using new software and techniques and within the Minworth Sewage Treatment Works CHP Replacement project, by accelerating project delivery with the supply chain working alongside each other to create the BIM model at the same time.
These examples show the innovative programme of change which has transformed how the firm undertakes design by delivering consistent, lasting and significant improvement.
Moors Gorse

After the introduction of a bike trail into Cannock Chase, the number of people using the Moors Gorse railway level crossing increased to as many as 3,000 cyclists per day. Following the near miss of 20 cyclists, who had stopped on the crossing, it was immediately deemed unsafe and a bridge to remove the crossing was commissioned and designed.
The project included working in a designated Area of Natural Beauty in close proximity to an occupied residence, with a water course on one side and forestry commission land on the other. It was also used by horse riders, cyclists and walkers and was home to adders.
The team collaborated with interest groups, trawled through extensive legislation and engaged with planning teams. With so many interested parties, more than 20 options were reviewed before an innovative bridge design was agreed, satisfying planning and exceeding the expectations of all involved.

Engagement with sustainability through education of the engineering community is key to achieving low carbon and sustainable infrastructure. In June 2013, an in-house initiative at Mott MacDonald tackled this issue head on with a Birmingham office team organising a week of local activities designed to engage and educate in-house engineers as well as visitors, clients and the wider Mott MacDonald community.
Within the engineering and infrastructure-focused environment, communications and activities were carefully chosen to match staff motivation, concentrating on what sustainability really meant to project teams on a daily basis.
Using themes such as innovation and collaboration, a mixture of workshops and fun events were organised including an innovative Pavegen energy harvesting flooring installation in the Newhall Street office reception. This successful campaign resulted in high levels of staff participation, as well as awareness of energy harvesting systems to over 60 visiting client organisations.
