Host of national operators prepare to open at Bishop Auckland Retail and Leisure Park

Brands including The Range, Puregym, Popeyes, Greggs, Tui, Superbowl º£½ÇÊÓƵ, and Reel Cinemas will open at the new destination

The Bishop Auckland Retail & Leisure Park scheme

A host of national operators are poised to open at the North East’s latest retail and leisure park later this year.

The Bishop Auckland Retail & Leisure Park is being developed by Fieldon Bridge Developments, ahead of a planned grand opening in the summer – two years later than originally planned, after the pandemic triggered a number of challenges and delays. The £40m-plus scheme is bringing restaurants, retailers and a new cinema to the town, with brands including The Range, Puregym, Popeyes, Greggs, Tui, Superbowl º£½ÇÊÓƵ, and Reel Cinemas, with the new openings set to create around 450 jobs once it is fully up and running.

The 160,000sqft site will support surrounding existing businesses, including Sainsbury’s, Tesco, M&S Foodhall, Pets at Home, Boots, Next, TK Maxx, McDonalds, KFC and other national brands. Newcomers include The Range, which is unveiling a new 40,000 sqft superstore, while Home Bargains has committed to a 40,000 sqft relocation, trebling the size of its current store in the town one on the back of excellent trading in the area.

Puregym, meanwhile, has signed a deal to bring forward an 11,000 sqft gym, and Superbowl º£½ÇÊÓƵ will offer ten pin bowling lanes, a soft play centre, ninja assault course, amusement arcade, a food diner, and a boutique lounge bar. Popeyes, which opened its first North East eatery at the Gateshead Metrocentre in the summer of 2022, has now opened a drive-thru restaurant and is trading ahead of the scheme opening. Greggs and Tui are also fitting out their units. Rounding out the list of operators is Reel Cinemas, which will open a seven-screen venue.

Letting agents for the scheme, Leeds-based WSB Property Consultants LLP said they are in talks with leisure and retail operators to take on the remaining two units.

Adam Mobley, partner at WSB, said: “These retailers joining the scheme highlight the strong demand for connected experiences on the scheme and we are nearly at the end of the journey of providing a top-class retail and leisure scheme for the people of Bishop Auckland and the surrounding areas.”
