HMRC office move will be "huge" for Newcastle city centre, leaders say

The Government agency is to move 9,000 staff from Longbenton and Washington into new offices in Pilgrim Street

HMRC to move to Newcastle city centre in biggest ever letting

Civic leaders in Newcastle say moves to house 9,000 Government workers in the city centre will provide a major boost to the area’s economy.

Workers from HMRC offices in Longbenton and Washington will switch to a new base in Pilgrim’s Quarter, the former Odeon cinema site, over the next few years, as part of a process to modernise the department.

The tax agency has taken a 25-year lease on the site, which is part of a wider regeneration of the Pilgrim Street area by development companies led by the Reuben brothers.

The influx of new workers will provide a boost for city centre businesses, especially shops, bars and restaurants, which were struggling even before the pandemic.

Jen Hartley, director of Invest Newcastle, said: “HMRC’s move to Pilgrim’s Quarter will be transformational for Newcastle having a huge social and economic impact at such a critical stage in our economic recovery. Not only will it bring thousands of skilled jobs to the city centre, but it will also support us to attract further investment and talent to the region.

“The announcement recognises Newcastle as a vibrant place for businesses and people with our proximity to two world-leading universities and the 24-acre innovation hub, Newcastle Helix. The 9,000 HMRC roles show a clear commitment from Government to address inequality in the North, putting Newcastle at the heart of these plans.

"Having been involved in this project from the very beginning, I am so pleased to see its announcement today.”
