Handelsbanken expands Birmingham base

Midlands HQ of Swedish banking group extends commitment to Birmingham city centre with seven-year lease

Handelsbanken has expanded its presence at Two Colmore Square

Swedish bank Handelsbanken has expanded its base in Birmingham's business district by 40 per cent.

The bank has signed a new seven-year lease on its space in Two Colmore Square.

Regional head Nick Lowe said: "I am delighted by the fact that our branch network in our central region has almost doubled to 42 branches since its inception in 2011, which has resulted in our need to take a little more space."

Rupert Young, development director with Two Colmore Square's owner Nurton Developments, said the bank's decision demonstrated its continued commitment to the region, which was encouraging news for the Midlands.

"It's excellent to see an organisation which prides itself on banking continuing to flourish," he added.

"We've attracted some excellent high-profile names since we acquired the building in 2004 including VAX, Shoosmiths and Jacobs.

"This expansion is also great sign of the strength of the Birmingham market too."
