Plans to turn a section of the former premises of a car parts business in Derby into a large 24-hour gym have been given the green light.

Earlier this year, plans were submitted to Derby City Council to turn part of the ground floor of the Midland Car Parts unit, in Parcel Terrace, into a 7,200 sq ft health and fitness centre.

The application was lodged by Foundry Gym, which already has gyms across the West Midlands in Walsall, Wolverhampton, Dudley and Stafford.

Now, the city council has given Foundry the go-ahead to convert the Derby property, which would be served by 35 parking spaces and five cycle spaces.

According to the plans, the gym would employ 10 full-time staff and have a total membership of 500, with space to cater for around 50 customers at a time.

In the original planning documents submitted by Roger Yarwood Planning Consultants, on behalf of Foundry Gym, it said: “The unit comprises a large open space with toilets, storage compartments and offices.

“It is a two-storey building but the application relates only to the ground floor.

“Given the previous use, there will be no increase in traffic. The building is well located to serve the proposed purpose, with easy access to public transport facilities.
