Green light for Birmingham's latest tall tower project

Planners supportive of new development which will dominate the skyline west of the city centre

Birmingham planning chiefs have handed the green light to a residential tower set to become the city's tallest building.

Developer Euro Property Investments is behind the project to build a 61-storey skyscraper at the corner of Broad Street and Ryland Street on a site currently occupied by office block Centennial House which will be demolished.

There will be 503 apartments, ground-floor shops, a cinema, gym and workshop facilities and a rooftop restaurant and bar in a glass 'crown' on levels 59 and 60 which is said to be the highest in the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ outside of London.

There will be 224 one-bedroom and 279 two-bedroom apartments for sale, secure storage for around 250 bikes but no car parking however a new tram stop will be located immediately in front of the building when the Metro is extended.

At 633 ft, it will surpass the BT Tower by 134 ft to become Birmingham's tallest building.

Birmingham City Council's planning committee approved the development at 100 Broad Street, which was designed by Jewellery Quarter-based practice Glancy Nicholls Architects, at its meeting yesterday.

Committee members were broadly supportive although Cllr Lou Robson expressed disappointment that only 25 of the new apartments would be allocated for affordable housing - a five per cent provision against council policy of 35 per cent.
