Green light for another Jewellery Quarter bar

City planners back regeneration of vacant unit despite protests from housing association residents living above the unit

A new bar will open in the Bismillah Building

The Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham will be backed a project to renovate vacant space in a former electroplating factory.

New company Lone Wolf Pubs has secured permission to open a bar in the ground floor of the Bismillah Building, Constitution Hill,

The unit, on the corner with Water Street, will house a bar capable of holding up to 120 people and serving cold food snacks.

Bismillah Building, which used to be the home of the city's Pakistan Consulate, is owned by housing association Midland Heart and contains around 150 flats.

Birmingham City Council's planning committee approved the project when it met today.

Speaking on behalf of the residents at the meeting, Thomas O'Flaherty told councillors they would suffer from late-night noise, anti-social behaviour and even people smoking outside the bar.

But Geoff Wright, a planning agent representing Lone Wolf Pubs, said the unit had been empty for quite some time and the application would bring it back into productive use.

"The area is one of transition and regeneration and this project is in keeping with that," he added.
