Grand Central and New Street station sweep the board at RICS Awards

Revamp of station and former Pallasades shopping centre wins overall project of the year and three other category prizes

Revamp of New Street station and Grand Central was named project of the year

The regenerated and have swept the board at the 2016 RICS Awards.

The £750 million revamp of the station and the old Pallasades shopping centre above was crowned overall project of the year at the trade body's West Midlands awards last night after picking up three other category prizes.

Judges praised the project's attention to detail, environmental considerations and the way it had been integrated into the region's infrastructure.

Chair of the panel Richard Moxon said: "The project also demonstrates innovative solutions for complex demolition and construction problems while maintaining operations and integrating a variation of professional skills gives this project its commercial vitality.

"Logistics, collaboration and innovation combining to build a futuristic design with a concourse five times larger than London Euston while maintaining a fully operational service.

"Creating such a visually striking yet practical 'International Gateway' to Birmingham makes it a worthy winner."

The awards are run by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and celebrate inspirational initiatives in the land, property and construction sectors across Birmingham, Black County, Herefordshire, Coventry, Warwickshire, Staffordshire and Shropshire.

Also taking home prizes at last night's awards were the second phase of The School Yard in Harborne by EDG Property - - and the conversion of next to Aston University into student accommodation (above).
