Construction group GMI has been awarded the contract to deliver a 400,000 sq ft warehousing and logistics hub in south Birmingham.

The scheme, to be called 'Urban 8 Logistics Park', will be built on the former Pilkington Automotive and GKN Aerospace sites in Kings Norton.

The £32.9 million development will feature eight, energy-efficient units ranging from 25,000 sq ft to 70,000 sq ft.

The new park is being developed by Tristan Capital Partners and Canmoor, in partnership with Henley regeneration specialist St Francis Group and could create 900 jobs at the 29-acre brownfield site, off Eckersall Road.

In 2019, engineering group GKN Aerospace announced the phased closure of its Kings Norton factory which produced high-performance windscreens and windows for civilian and military aircraft, with work transferring to other sites.

Glass manufacturer Pilkington Automotive consolidated its operations into a larger warehouse in nearby Redditch.

Birmingham City Council granted full planning permission in 2021 and the site was cleared.
