Galliford Try has won the £66m contract to build 2 Arena Central for HSBC

Work on a new headquarters for in Birmingham is expected to start imminently after a lead contractor was appointed.

Uxbridge-based Galliford Try, which last month won the contract will lead development of the 11-storey in Broad Street.

It will house thousands of staff working in HSBC's business and retail banking arms which are relocating from Canary Wharf in London as part of government plans to separate off investment work from other sections of high street banks from 2019.

2 Arena Central, which will be opposite the Library of Birmingham and next to Alpha Tower, will have grade A office accommodation and ground floor retail or restaurant space across 210,000 sq ft.

It earlier this year.

Work is due to start on the £66 million contract in September once demolition and clearance has been completed on the 9.2-acre site which used to house the old ATV studios.

Galliford Try, which also built the £32 million extension at Edgbaston Stadium, will also deliver more than £10 million of public realm which has been designed by landscape architectural practice Gillespies and will comprise more than 50 per cent soft landscaping to create an urban meadow.

The works will also include the creation of Bank Court, a new public courtyard behind the Municipal Bank building in Broad Street and extensive new landscaping around Alpha Tower.
