The construction group which built Edgbaston Stadium will lead development of the new Birmingham Conservatoire.

Listed group Galliford Try has announced it has won the contract to build the £46 million conservatoire which will replace Adrian Boult Hall in

(BCU) old conservatoire, which was designed by and opened in 1973, is being demolished as part of the

The new building, designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, will be based in Jennens Road in the district, next to BCU's Parkside building.

It will house teaching facilities and a 500-seat auditorium as well as two additional performance spaces.

Greg Fitzgerald, executive chairman of Uxbridge-based Galliford Try, said: "We are delighted to be involved in such a high-profile and significant project for both Birmingham and the surrounding area.

"We look forward to working with Birmingham City University and the design team to produce a world-class musical facility for both the students and the wider community."

Professor Cliff Allan, BCU's vice-chancellor, added: "As the first new conservatoire in the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ in over a generation, this development is not only a significant addition to the city of Birmingham but also to music education across the country.
