A Cornish free range egg producer is set to expand into a new multi-million pound headquarters.

St Ewe Free Range Eggs, which supplies supermarkets and food retailers throughout the South West, is building a new 50,000 sq ft packing and distribution centre, which will also house its head office.

The family-run business, which has been farming in the Truro area for more than 40 years, said the move would enable it to increase processing capacity by more than 100%.

Chief executive Rebecca Tonks, whose father started the farming business in 1967, added that a finance package secured from bank HSBC would help boost production from one million to 10 million eggs per week.

Ms Tonks said: “It’s an extremely exciting time for St Ewe Free Range Eggs as we move into our brand-new offices and distribution centre, opening up opportunities to expand our business across the º£½ÇÊÓƵ.

“We dedicate ourselves to producing eggs while being mindful of our environmental impact and ensuring our hens’ and team's welfare is our number one business priority.â€

Martin Hanson, head of agriculture at HSBC º£½ÇÊÓƵ business banking, added: “It’s the perfect example of a business with family heritage that puts welfare first and gives back to the community, so we couldn’t be more excited to see it continue to expand.â€

During the national Covid-19 lockdowns, the company partnered with food waste charities across the South West, donating one egg per dozen sold in a bid to donate two million eggs to those living in food poverty.

St Ewe Free Range Eggs became a limited company in 2019, with more than 200,000 birds supplied by itself and a network comprising 16 other free-range farms across the region.
