Fort Dunlop facelift given the green light

First major renovation work of old tyre factory in a decade can now go ahead after city planners welcome redevelopment

A former Dunlop tyre factory in Birmingham reborn as a mixed-use complex will undergo its first major facelift since reopening in 2006.

which houses a Travelodge hotel, shops, offices and also the Birmingham Post's publisher BPM Media, was built in 1920 and was the main building of the former Dunlop Rubber factory area.

Designed by Sidney Stott and WW Gibbings, its principal use was for the storage of tyres but it was derelict for two decades until its redevelopment by Manchester-based group Urban Splash a decade ago.

Tristan Capital, which acquired the has today won planning permission for this latest regeneration work which will include a new enclosed glass conference area on the roof, overlooking the M6.

A total 473 spaces will be added to the car park via new decking and additional parking in front of the hotel.

There will be two new garden walkways in a bid to improve public realm in front of the building while the Travelodge will undergo its first facelift since opening.

The project was approved by Birmingham City Council's planning committee today which welcomed the extra parking as the area is heavily congested with cars during the week.

Coun Peter Douglas Osborn (Con Weoley) said: "I'm more than appreciative of the need for this in this instance. Anyone who has parked there knows how little space there is. The is no rail station nearby."
