Five projects have been singled out as being among the best buildings and structures in Yorkshire after being shortlisted for the 2022 RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Yorkshire Awards.

The projects that have been shortlisted are Carnegie School of Sport by Sheppard Robson; Courtyard House by Doma Architects; Leeds Footbridge by Gagarin Studio with DP Squared; Maggie’s Leeds by Heatherwick Studio and The Alice Hawthorn designed by De Matos Ryan.

De Matos Ryan earns its place on the shortlist after saving the community pub The Alice Hawthorn from closure. Based in the North Yorkshire village of Nun Monkton, the scheme involved the addition of 12 guest bedrooms and the renovation of its Grade II listed pub.

Sheppard Robson last year completed the £45m Carnegie School of Sport for Leeds Beckett University’s Headingley Campus, which brings the Carnegie School of Sport’s specialist teaching and research facilities under one roof, having previously been spread over five buildings.

The major sports centre for the university features an encased rooftop running track while also providing a base for undergraduate, postgraduate and research programmes as well as a training hub for elite athletes.

Harrogate based Doma Architects are shortlisted for their work on Courtyard House, a project in which the firm was asked to design a contemporary low energy new house, complete with an art studio, on the site of existing stable buildings in Wetherby.

The Maggie’s Centre in Leeds, which provides free practical and emotional support for people with cancer, marks the first health building completed by Heatherwick Studio, founded by designer Thomas Heatherwick.
