A firm responsible for some of the º£½ÇÊÓƵ's most celebrated reading centres has been appointed to design Nottingham's new Central Library.

FaulknerBrowns Architects, which also designed the city's National Ice Centre, won a "competitive" tender process and will now be tasked with driving forward Nottingham City Council's vision for "the best children's library in the country".

Central Library will be based in the new  Car Park building and forms a major part of the city's Southern Gateway regeneration, which will improve the southern entrance to Nottingham.

FaulknerBrowns has previous experience in the sector, having designed The Word, National Centre for the Written World in Tyneside, which has been described as a "model for what a modern library should be".

Steve McIntyre, partner architect for FaulknerBrowns, said he was extremely pleased to work on the Broadmarsh project.

He added: "We are excited by the council’s ambition to create a library for the future - a destination in the heart of Nottingham city centre to inspire visitors of all ages."

The announcement comes as work continues on developments across the south side of Nottingham.

Contractors are on site at the car park area and work is now under way to create the new intu Broadmarsh shopping centre, scheduled for completion in 2021. The busy walkway through the centre is now closed overnight until the redevelopment is complete.
