David Wilson Homes buys stake in former Sherwood Forest colliery regeneration site

Thoresby Colliery was the region’s last deep mine and owner Harworth’s masterplan includes homes, jobs and a country park

Thoresby colliery closed in July 2015 - this is how it will eventually look

David Wilson Homes has bought a stake in a 450 acre former colliery site in the Sherwood Forest.

Harworth Group plc has sold a 176 acre parcel of the former Thoresby Colliery site to the Leicestershire-based Barratt subsidiary, for 219 new homes.

Harworth said the land, near the village of Edwinstowe, in north Notts, was sold “at a price in line with its December 2019 book value”.

The colliery closed in July 2015 and the land is currently being redeveloped by Harworth as Thoresby Vale.

Harworth has demolished the pit heads and most of the buildings and gained planning for 800 new homes, ranging from one bed apartments to four bed family detached houses.

There are also plans for a park and children’s play area, footpaths and a link road to serve Thoresby Vale’s new primary school, which Harworth hopes to complete in time for the September 2023 school year.

Thoresby Colliery was the region’s last deep mine and Harworth’s masterplan also includes 250,000 sq ft of employment space, a retirement village, and the transformation of a 300 acre former spoil heap into a country park.

It has spent the last couple of years preparing the land, installing services and is close to completing the country park.
