Designs for a new science and technology hub at the which received stinging criticism from Post readers have been praised by city planners.

The university is planning to build 'Central Teaching Labs' on its campus in Edgbaston in order to bring all science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields into a single base.

But when the planning application was lodged earlier this year, artist's impressions of the final, three-storey building (above and below) were condemned on the Birmingham Post website.

Reader Ernest123 said "Call themselves architects. What a mess of a design" while another poster wrote "Hope that isn't going to be the final render!? Looks like a gaping mouth with teeth".

But, according to a report prepared ahead of the city council's planning meeting this week, the design is a "high standard" which will complement other developments taking place on the campus.

The report said: "The Unitary Development Plan identifies that a high standard of design is essential to the continued improvement of Birmingham as a desirable place to live, work and visit.

"It also requires developers to consider the site in context and states that, to avoid problems of piecemeal and incremental development, comprehensive master plans should be prepared.

"The proposed building would effectively be a cuboid shape.....the design is a contemporary solution that clearly would create its own identity.
