A new performance arts and events venue is set to open in the renovated St Michael on The Mount Without church in Bristol later this year.

Following the restoration of the former church on St Michael's Hill, the Mount Without will begin hosting weddings, exhibitions and networking events in the autumn.

The 300-capacity venue will also be used as a creative space, with Bristol dance company Impermanence set to host a regular programme of events.

While also staging their own performances, the group will also offer regular training, rehearsal and development opportunities for young people in the city.

The interior of the building, which was damaged by a fire in 2016, features what remains of the church’s monuments, as well as a new suspended art installation by Bristol’s Backwell Designs.

Local historic building developer Norman Routeledge purchased the property in 2019. The venue represents his fourth major project in the city, having recently been behind the restoration of Kings Weston House.

Mr Routeledge said: “The Mount Without has been a gathering place for over 900 years, so we’re proud to have recommissioned this beautiful building and look forward to opening it up once again as a creative space for the city.”
