A new housing development at the former Filton Airfield, near Bristol, has been named one of the best designed in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ.

The first phase of Brabazon – a neighbourhood being built on the site of the historic airfield – has been shortlisted for the Housing Design Awards.

The properties were designed by architecture firm Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, which was involved in the restoration of Bath Abbey, and aim to reflect the heritage of the airfield, according to the company.

The homes are built of red brick to match the material of the listed aircraft hangar 16U, which is being restored as part of the development.

The rooflines of the houses have also been designed to “echo the profile of an aeroplane’s tail-fin”, according to developers YTL.

Construction of the homes started in January, before the Covid-19 outbreak, and YTL says it is still expecting the first new residents to move in next year.

Seb Loyn, planning and development director at YTL Developments, said: “Brabazon was the birthplace of Concorde; we have always felt that we needed to be different to live up to that legacy.

“We’ve made some bold design choices; our homes are much more spacious than the norm and many feature double-height ceilings.
