Birmingham apartment scheme next to canal network tops out

Glasswater Locks will deliver more than 700 new flats, commercial space and other amenities

A topping out ceremony was held to mark construction reaching the highest point on the Glasswater Locks scheme, in Birmingham

Construction of a new canalside apartment scheme in Birmingham has topped out.

The work by housebuilder St Joseph on Glasswater Locks is regenerating a three-acre, brownfield site overlooking the Digbeth Branch Canal off Lawley Middleway.

It will create a mixed-use scheme led by 762 apartments.

There will also be amenities for residents, public space, 20,000 sq ft of commercial accommodation set around the refurbished banks of the canal and new pedestrian and cycle routes.

The project comprises six separate blocks, the tallest of which is Glasswater Tower at 37 storeys.

A local jobs and skills programme is also under way which involves St Joseph, training provider The Skills Centre, Birmingham City Council and West Midlands Combined Authority working together to deliver training and apprenticeship opportunities.

The scheme has already supported 122 people with accredited training and given 51 local people paid employment.
