BIMM Bristol unveils plans to move into new flagship building

The music college said the move would allow it to create more opportunities within creative industries

A music college in Bristol whose alumni include singer George Ezra and members of the band IDLES has unveiled plans for a new building it plans to move into next year.

The BIMM Institute Bristol is aiming to open at a 33,000 sq ft former office building St James’ House in Stokes Croft in time for the next academic year starting September 2022.

Planning permission for a four-storey space has already been granted, and work on the facility is due to begin this month.

The new building would replace BIMM’s current base at number one Passage Street, which BusinessLive’s sister website BristolLive has reported could be set to be redeveloped into a

  • As well as study spaces, edit suites, rehearsal rooms and lecture rooms, plans for BIMM’s new flagship building include:
  • Two industry-standard recording studios and live rooms
  • A creative media suite with a green screen and professional lighting rig
  • Two high specification performance spaces
  • A glass DJ performance booth
  • A café-bar

BIMM said that St James’ House proximity to its proximity to its building in King Square would allow the institute to form a “more substantial presence” and allow it utilise a range of local independent venues.

BIMM Institute Bristol’s college principal Hannah Phipps said the new facility would allow it to create more opportunities in the creative industries for people in the local community.

Ms Phipps said: “We believe that the best way to learn about the creative industries is to actually work in the creative industries.”

“The in-house venue and professional facilities offer students the chance to hit the ground running with their own projects, getting real work experience from day one.”
