The 150-year-old Chesterfield furniture store Eyres is going under the hammer this Friday following what commercial property agency Innes England said was “overwhelming interest from buyers”. It is up for a guide price of £650,000.

The historic store closed last year after failing to secure critical funding which had been necessary to maintain its survival.

The business was originally opened in 1875 by Isaac Eyres and the 38,279 sq ft landmark store on the corner of Holywell Street, Chesterfield, features four trading floors, a big basement and goods yard as well as an in-built café and kitchen.

Innes England director Nick Hosking is handling the arrangements. He said: “It’s no surprise that interest has been so high with this sale.

“The Eyres furniture building has been a well-known feature in Chesterfield’s city centre for longer than anyone can remember.

“The building is a prominent landmark offering large floorplates with potential for a variety of uses and is well located within the heart of the town.

“Having operated as a furniture store for almost a century and a half, the premises fall under class E of the Uses Classes order 1987.

“This premises has the potential for a wide range of purposes if the proper investment is put in, with the space itself being well suited to uses such as retail, healthcare, restaurant, office, or even residential apartments.
