Barry hotel to expand into former care home and add 14 new rooms

The Mount Rooms in the popular South Wales tourist town will add more rooms as part of its expansion plans

The Mount Rooms hotel, the white building, will expand into the red brick building to its left, a former care home

With the increase in staycations a South Wales hotel is expanding into a neighbouring property to add 14 rooms.

The Mount Rooms in Barry, a popular tourist destination and just 20 minutes from Cardiff, has had planning approved to expand into the attached building and add 14 rooms to the hotel.

The building, the former Sunrise Residential Home on Porthkerry Road, has been vacant for a number of years, and will now become part of the hotel, following an extensive refurbishment.

A spokesperson for the company said: “We are excited to increase our footprint on the area– with the rise of staycations and demand increasing in Barry, this has allowed for our expansion.

"With our current hotel development, Mount Rooms Hotel - we have seen a sharp increase of tourism with guests staying just to visit Barry Island or spot famous landmarks from Gavin and Stacey. Creating an additional 14 rooms will allow us to welcome more tourists to the area as Barry becomes more established.”

The applications says the proposed conversion would not result in any physical alteration to the building.
