Britain’s biggest housebuilder has appealed a decision to turn down planning permission for 223 new homes in Melton.

Barratt Homes applied for permission in February 2019 to create the new neighbourhood on land off Kirby Lane in the town.

Melton Borough Council turned down the application which will now go to a Government planning inspector for a ruling.

The council said in a letter seen by LeicestershireLive: "An appeal has been made to the Secretary of State in respect of the site.

"The appeal follows the refusal of planning permission by this council.

"The appeal is to be decided on the basis of an informal hearing to be held at 10am on December 7, 2021.

"Any comments already made following the original application for planning permission (unless they are expressly confidential) have been forwarded to the Planning Inspectorate and copied to the appellant and will be taken into account by the inspector in deciding the appeal."

The hearing will be held in public at the council's headquarters in Station Approach, Melton.
