Anglesey abattoir site redevelopment is back on the table

New proposals for the Welsh Country Foods site in Gaerwen have been submitted

A plan to demolish an Anglesey abattoir and build business units is back on the table.

The Welsh Country Foods site in Gaerwen closed in 2013 in a major economic blow for the island.

Owned by Dutch food group Vion, the decision led to the loss of 300 jobs, and the site has lain dormant ever since.

A scheme was previously submitted to demolish the abattoir buildings and build 14 business units.

But Anglesey council planners refused the plans after judging that the applicants, Amber REI Holdings Ltd, had failed to demonstrate evidence of the impact it would have on a species of newt in the area.

Now the proposal has been submitted again with additional reports, including habitat and wildlife population surveys.

These concluded no newts or reptiles would be impacted by the development.

The new application seeks permission for demolition, approval of full planning for two units and outline planning for the remainder of the units.
