More than £1 million is being invested in a new hub to supply hydrogen gas containers for green transport.

Luxfer Gas Cylinders is putting the investment into its European base in Nottingham to make it a production facility for what are known as “multiple element gas containers” – used to store and transport high pressure gases.

The first containers –which are part of its G-Stor Hydrosphere range – will be available next summer in 20 ft, 40 ft and 45 ft sizes. Each will hold between 0.5 and 1.4 tonnes of clean, transportable gas, opening up access to hydrogen for companies targeting greener operations.

Luxfer Gas Cylinders has been operating for more than 80 years and has sites across the world.

The business is a division of Luxfer Holdings, a global manufacturer of high-pressure cylinders. Its Colwick site in Nottingham already makes up to a million cylinders each year – and is also home to alternative fuel specialists that have embedded hydrogen-powered systems into buses, trucks, trains, boats, tractors and even drones.

The Nottingham base employs more than 230 people and the new hub will see a number of additional jobs created.

Mark Lawday, vice president and general manager of Luxfer Europe, said: “This investment is the natural next step in continuing to build our European hydrogen capability and support the development of the hydrogen economy, which is going to be essential in enabling all of us to reach our decarbonisation goals in Europe in 2030 and beyond.

“Thanks to our industry-leading G-Stor Pro Type 3 and G-Stor Go Type 4 core cylinder technology, combined with decades of experience in alternative fuel systems design and development, we have a product range to provide customers with a choice of technology, module capacities and features, to match current and future needs.”
